Look What a Huakailani Girl found in the Parking Lot

This butterfly was found in the parking lot near our school.
It wasn't moving and it can't fly.
A Huakailani student saw this crumpled butterfly and took it in to the school.
We are all hoping it will be okay.

Metamorphosis Caught in Action - Welcome to a New World!

 This is what happened next.

Mr. B took this beautiful photo of a chrysalis. Looks like a butterfly will be emerging soon!

Caterpillar, Caterpillar

It was caterpillar, caterpillar all over again and all of the crown flower leaves have once again been munched away!

All is quiet as beautiful chrysalis hang in the classroom once again.

This time we only rescued around 15 caterpillars. We left the rest outside to see how they would do in the wild. So far one caterpillar is still munching away in the garden.

Will post pictures soon.

Butterflies Laid Eggs

We released all of our butterflies this time!  We released around 70 butterflies!!

GUESS WHAT!

We found eggs in the Crown Flower Garden.

Can you spot the eggs?

We have seen our butterflies fluttering around Kailua Town every day!

A "GREEN" Caterpillar

Look where we found a chrysalis. This caterpillar was an environmentally friendly one. He decided to hang out on the recycle bin.
This is a close up of the chrysalis. COOL!

All of the caterpillars in the Lower School are now in Chrysalis and only about two caterpillars remain in the Upper School.

The ones we found on the safety vest and recycle bin were escapees.

Here is another escape, we found right outside our classroom door munching on a crown flower plant we have out there. IT IS HUGE!!!! We think it is be biggest one we have raised yet.

We are hypothesizing that big caterpillars will be come big butterflies. We shall see!

No More Plant?

Look we ate the whole plant! Now we are working on the stalk!

Almost There!

Some are big and some are almost there!

A Cleaner Home

Before- We lived in a dump!:(  Lots of caterpillar poop!

After- Yay!:)

Buddy Time

If you can see in the center of the pic, there is a small caterpillar on top of a giant!

The Size Cycle

First is small...then is medium... then is big!

Big Giant

This is our biggest caterpillar, but those other caterpillars will catch up soon!

Run away

This caterpillar here thought he or she was ready to make a chrysalis, but nope he or she is still to tiny!

Our 3rd Cycle

Caterpillar, Caterpillar - Round 3!

It's caterpillar, caterpillar time again. This time we have approximately 80 caterpillars.

The next generation!

There are about 30 eggs laid.  We released 5 butterflies today.

Butterflies raise beautiful butterflies!

September 23, Eggs!

The cycle begins again. The butterflies are laying eggs. We released one butterfly so the current butterfly count is 10. We will release all of the butterflies soon.

Emerging!

The butterflies have all emerged from their chrysalis and are more beautiful than ever.
